Variety had an interesting new article today that sheds some details on what we can expect from the upcoming Venom and Silver & Black films from the Non-MCU Sony Spider-Verse.As we know, Venom is going the horror route, while Silver & Black is leaning more towards buddy comedy, but there’s more to it than that. According to Silver & Black director Gina Prince-Bythewood:
“I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive,” says Prince-Bythewood. She’s been looking at the origins of each character in order to explain how Silver Sable became a killer for hire and why Black Cat is drawn to crime. In both cases, she found that the characters were haunted by the deaths of their parents.
* Great, I wonder if both of their moms will be named Martha…
For his part, Venom director, Ruben Fleischer is looking for a vibe that is closer to the works of John Carpenter or David Cronenberg and he’s looking forward to exploring the almost Jekyll and Hyde relationship between Eddie Brock and the Symbiote.
“They become almost a third being, which is what Venom is. There’s a famous quote: ‘You’re Eddie Brock. I’m the symbiote. Together we are Venom.’”
You’ve got to give them credit for trying something creative with the characters from Marvel’s Spider-Man catalog. It’ll be interesting to see if fans are willing to pony up their $17 for Spideyverse films that don’t actually have their favorite neighborhood wall-crawler in them.
