Zack Snyder is a good director, but The first Rebel Moon film has left a lot of people wondering if he’s better off adapting other people’s material as opposed to being in control of his own stories. But, before we completely write off Rebel Moon, we have to remember that part 2: Scargiver is set to hit Netflix in April and a Director’s cut of Part 1 is hitting the streamer in July.
In a new interview, Snyder talked about the inspirations for the film including movies like Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Conan The Barbarian, and Excalibur. We were honestly surprised that he didn’t mention the 1980 film, Battle Beyond The Stars, which has a lot of major similarities. However, in the talk, he did talk about one director that was in his head, Paul Verhoeven. As you know Verehoven directed Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct, Showgirls, and many other films, but it was one film that seemed to have inspired him the most, the film Flesh + Blood. The 1985 film starring Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
As to how that inspiration, along with other films of Verehoeven will play out in the director’s cut, Snyder says we can expect a movie that is “Way more brutal. More bizarre. Verhoeven-esque. More RoboCop than you know… in the way that it uses violence as another character. And there’s a lot of sex in it, and sci-fi fantasy.“
