Amazon just scored a coup when it comes to animated series. The online retailer’s streaming branch has just announced that they’ll be releasing a new animated series from Studio Ghibli titled, ‘Ronja the Robber’s Daughter.’ The series was developed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Goro Miyazaki and is based on the classic Swedish children’s book, Ronja and the robbers by Astrid Lindgren.
While the show has already been running in Japan for two years, this is the first time it will be released to US audiences. Adding to the appeal of the show is the announcement that X-Files/ Hannibal Star and frequent Ghibli voice actress Gillian Anderson will be lending her voice to the show as the series’ narrator.
From the clip below, you can see that it still feels like Studio Ghibli animation, but they’ve definitely scaled down the detail for the rigors of producing a TV series.
The story is of a little girl named Ronja, the daughter of a colourful robber chieftain who lives in a castle high on a rock in a dark pine forest. She gets to know the creatures of the forest, meets another kid like herself, and questions her father’s life of robbery.
