In 1862, a scientist and a hot air balloon pilot teamed-up for a record-breaking flight designed to help advance what we know about weather and the atmosphere. While we’re sure it was quite the adventure, it’s doubtful that it was quite as spectacular as the upcoming dramatization from Amazon Films seems to be.

In the movie version, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are the ones to take flight and it looks like they will spend the vast majority of their time in the air focused less on science and more on staying alive. Either way, it looks like it could be a fun movie.

The Aeronauts flies in select theaters on December 6th (so it can qualify for an Academy Award) and then moves over to Prime Video on December 20th.

In 1862, daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) teams up with pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) to advance human knowledge of the weather and fly higher than anyone in history. While breaking records and advancing scientific discovery, their voyage to the very edge of existence helps the unlikely pair find their place in the world they have left far below them. But they face physical and emotional challenges in the thin air, as the ascent becomes a fight for survival.
