If you had asked me if I ever thought I’d be looking at a trailer for a film with Shia Lebouf or Dakota Johnson with thoughts like “Wow, this looks really good!” a year ago, I would have laughed in your face. Yet, here we are, staring down the barrel of the 100% Rotten Tomatoes reviewed ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon.’
The film is being touted as both the ‘sweetest film of the year’ and a modern tale on the level of Mark Twain. Well, at least they are being smart and managing expectations… It looks like someone in the marketing department didn’t get the ‘Under Promise/ Over Deliver’ lecture.
In all seriousness though, it looks like a great film. It tells the story of a man with Down Syndrome who flees his group home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Along the way, he meets a drifter (Lebouf) who agrees to ferry him on his journey, but first, they must win over group home staffer Dakota Johnson.
The Peanut Butter Falcon is set for limited release on August 9th.
A modern Mark Twain style adventure story, THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON tells the story of Zak (Gottsagen), a young man with Down syndrome, who runs away from a residential nursing home to follow his dream of attending the professional wrestling school of his idol, The Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Haden Church). A strange turn of events pairs him on the road with Tyler (LaBeouf), a small-time outlaw on the run, who becomes Zak’s unlikely coach and ally. Together they wind through deltas, elude capture, drink whisky, find God, catch fish, and convince Eleanor (Johnson), a kind nursing home employee charged with Zak’s return, to join them on their journey.
