For her 3rd year dissertation project at Central Saint Martins, Katy Beveridge decided to create a new way to film animation in real time rather than the old techniques like stop-motion. The outcome? Her hypnotic zoetrope bicycle rims. It involves putting paper shapes on a bike wheel and using frame rate limitations to simulation animation.
In hindsight, the technique probably wouldn’t work for actual film animation since it’s limited. But she may have stumbled upon a new business involving the designing and selling of custom animated bicycle rims.
