Gray Wolves Spotted for the First Time in California in Nearly One Hundred Years

We’ve posted a few things lately about species fading into extinction, so it’s nice to start the week with some good news. There has not been a sighting of gray wolves in California since all the way back in 1924. Now, thanks to wilderness cams from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, we have our first look at not just one lone wolf, but a whole family consisting of two parents and two cubs in the northern part of the state.

Here’s what the chief of the CDFW’s Wildlife Branch had to say:
“We were really excited, if not amazed” at how quickly these wolves settled in and started reproducing. Gray wolves are considered endangered by both the California Endangered Species Act, as of 2014, and the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973, making it illegal to cause harm or capture the rare mammals.
