The first time I really remember hearing beat boxing as a kid and thinking it was cool was “Human Video Game” on DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s He’s the DJ, I’m The Rapper, an album that for me would probably be counted as the birth of Nerd Core. That’s right, I’m crediting Will Smith with being one of the Fathers of Nerd Core.
Anyways, for me the first real beat boxing I heard was tied to video games and that is why when I heard Hikakin doing his beat box version of Super Mario, I had to share him with you all. When I looked a little deeper, I found that this guy was more than just a one coin wonder. He’s posted some pretty kick ass beat box versions of everything from Street Fighter and Tetris Music to Bach and Daft Punk. YOu’ve got to check this guy out.
Now, if you are looking for a little old school inspiration… Here’s DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “Human Video Game.”
