Right now, Elon Musk is giving the Q&A on his new interplanetary rocket and plan to take mankind to Mars and Beyond. The biggest announcement of the event is his new rocket system, which he claims can transport 100 people to Mars in 80 days. He also claims that the rocket will be reusable up to 1,000 times.
The mission is not without it’s risk. Musk said that he anticipates early trips will have a high risk of fatality, but he laid out a plan that proposes a full colony on Mars within 40 to 100 years.
When asked about how he planned to keep humans safe on the journey, he admitted that there was some risk of radiation and cancer, but that they are working on shielding to protect the ship from solar storms. He stated that one of the easiest ways to help protect the crew from a solar storm is to turn the ship’s engine towards the storm, and have the humans gather in the front of the ship around a column of water.
