London’s Sewer System Hit By Titanic 130 Ton ‘Fatberg’

At first glance, a “fatberg” sounds like some new foodie monstrosity burger being served up by the finest hipster establishments of Brooklyn, but it’s actually kind of the aftermath. Untility workers in London are currently dealing with a ball of fat, oil, and other waste that is “excreted” from humans and flushed down the drain along with the increasingly popular adult wet wipes. The clog has reach a size of 273 yards anbd 130 tons and it is wreaking having on a Victorian Era sewer line.

Matt Rimmer, the head of waste for Thame’s Water, had this to say:

“This fatberg is up there with the biggest we’ve ever seen. It’s a total monster and taking a lot of manpower and machinery to remove as it’s set hard. It’s basically like trying to break up concrete. It’s frustrating as these situations are totally avoidable and caused by fat, oil and grease being washed down sinks and wipes flushed down the loo.”<

Here’s where you get to stop for a second and realize that whatever job you’ve been complaining about for the last couple of months is probably heaven compared to what the workers in this sewer are going through. According to the report, the task of clearing the fatberg has fallen to an 8-member crew, armed with high powered hoses that they are using to blast away 20-30 tons of the waste a day.

The cost of these increasing fatbergs is said to have reached approximately 1.1 million euros per month in upkeep.
