McDonald’s Japan Introduces ‘Adult Cream Pie…’

Sometimes things don’t translate the way you think they do. It’s kind of like how Gerber Baby food didn’t sell well in Africa when it was first released because literacy rates on the continent were so low that manufacturers would often print images of the food on the packaging. Gerber Baby Food had an adorable white baby on the package… Other times, the issue isn’t so much a cultural problem as much as a straight translation issue.

McDonald’s fried pies are some of the most popular foods they make all over the world. Depending on the country you are in, they might be offered in apple, cherry, Nutella, Matcha, or even Sweet potato. In Japan, they’ve just released a new style of pie called the Otona no Cream Pie, which translates to “Adult Cream Pie.” In their defense, the word “Otona” is a Japanese term that is most commonly associated with desserts when the makers want you to know that they are not as sweet as kid’s desserts, and are therefore perfect for grown-ups with more sophisticated palettes.

So ya, it all makes sense, and it seems like it’s just a semantic issue, but that isn’t going to keep up from giggling every time someone says adult cream pie.
