If you ever want to really have some fun, and waste a lot of money, try launching drones in airspace that is frequented by big birds of prey like the Wedge-tailed eagle. To date, the eagles over the skies of the St Ives gold mining operation in Western Africa have taken down nine drones with all of the efficiency that you’d expect from an animal that kills stuff in mid-air for fun and survival. These aren’t cheap little quad copter either. The UAVs that the eagles have decimated can fly at an altitude of about 125 metres, reaching speeds of up to 92km/h.
Here’s a video of one of the eagles in action, and one of the drones… in reaction.
