I want to believe, but a new official statement is trying to prove me otherwise.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued an official statement that there is no evidence that mermaids exist.
The statement, by the agency’s National Ocean Service, came after two letters requesting information about the mythical creature made popular by Disney (The Little Mermaid, Pirates of the Caribbeans).
The letters appear to have come from viewers of an Animal Planet broadcast in May entitled “Mermaids: The Body Found.”
Mermaids seen in the video were CGI and included testimony from two “scientists” who claimed to have found remains of a creature matching the description given be alleged witnesses of live mermaids.
Here’s what NOS had to say in their statement: “No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found. Why, then, do they occupy the collective unconscious of nearly all seafaring peoples? That’s a question best left to historians, philosophers, and anthropologists.”
