If you’ve been watching the news lately, you know that self-driving cars have been getting a little beat up in the press. You now… because they keep getting into accidents. That isn’t deterring the ride share company, Uber from unleashing their first fleet of the Skynet vehicles on the population of Pittsburgh. Thankfully, the autonomous Volvos will still come with a chaperone in the form of a human, sitting in the driver’s seat, should something go amiss. This news comes on the heels of Ford’s recent announcement that they’ll be launching their own self-driving fleet in the near future.
Personally, I’ve always felt that self-driving cars will remain an unsafe option until humans are no longer driving any cars. It seems like most self-driving accidents happen when another human driven car does something the self-driving car’s computer didn’t anticipate. Once they are all self-driving, they’ll be able to interact and prevent that sort of instability.
In the meantime, I guess we can look forward to a lot less radio commercials telling us how great it is to be an Uber driver. They’ve got T-1000’s for that now.
