We love a good mystery and the heist of one of the four existing pairs of Dorothy’s Ruby slippers from The Wizard Of Oz. Now, on the year of the 75’th anniversary of the film, documentary maker Theodore James is setting out on a mission to get to the bottom of the story.
Here’s a little background on the heist and the trailer for James’ Kickstarter Project.
On August 28, 2005 somebody stole one of the most iconic pieces of movie memorabilia, The Ruby Slippers from the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz”.
They were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, MN on loan from owner Michael Shaw. The crime was surprisingly unsophisticated in execution, not much more than a late night smash-and-grab. Police arrived on the scene only to find a broken rear-door window and smashed display case that once housed the slippers. No fingerprints were found and to add insult to injury, the security camera had not been operating that night.
The shoes were one of four pairs that were actually worn by Judy Garland in the film. The remaining three pairs are scattered across the country, one on display at the Smithsonian, another acquired by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences for a proposed museum and the last pair are privately owned. Today, these seventy-five year old sequin-covered heels are valued at nearly two million dollars each.
Got to KICKSTARTER to support the film and help solve the mystery!
