A woman recently disclosed to Madison, Wisconsin’s WKOW TV that something called Ubuntu prevented her from participating in her online classes because Ubuntu could not access the Internet.
According to reports, Abbie Schubert who had purchased a $1,100 Dell laptop was expecting “your classic bread-and-butter computer” but instead got Ubuntu which according to Schubert was neither bread nor butter.
Ubuntu is an open source (free software) operation system similar to Windows but runs off the Linux system instead. For most, it is a step up from the putrid crap that is of Windows, but for Schubert, it was “mess.”
“I regret ordering the computer” she says.
When Schubert contacted Dell for a replacement, she was told that “Ubuntu was great, college students loved it, it was compatible with everything.” Because of the glowing recommendation she decided to give it a chance, only to soon realize that Ubuntu was nothing like Windows. Her Verizon Internet did not work, neither did her copy of Microsoft Word. As a result, she was forced to drop out of her online classes for both the fall and spring semesters at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
“I’m extremely frustrated,” Schubert said. “I wanted to get back to school, but I needed a computer to be able to do that.”
