A shocking Paris study has uncovered a strange story about a Washington State woman who almost had to have her leg amputated as a result of her grapefruit diet.
According to the BBC, the 42-year-old woman went to the emergency room after complaining of dizziness, shortness of breath and difficulty walking. “An ultrasound revealed she had a large blood clot in her left leg, which was in danger of being amputated due to gangrene.”
The cause? A hormonal imbalance caused by her grapefruit a day weight-loss diet.
“Because the woman was on estrogen oral contraceptives, the grapefruit juice blocked the action of an enzyme which breaks down estrogen. Thus, on the third day of her diet, the patient’s estrogen levels were many times above normal, thus boosting coagulibility and helping the clot to form.”
