Wow… just wow. This looks bad. It looks like the rumor of Detective Pikachu putting an end to the video game movie curse could have been premature. While the Ryan Reynolds film is getting great first reactions, Sonic looks like it is set to inspire more nightmares than anything else. Let’s forget for a moment that the character design for the live-action/ CGI Sonic The Hedgehog looks like a furry in skinny pants. Nothing here makes sense, and it’s a massive shame. I’m thrilled to see Jim Carrey taking on the bad guy role again (hopefully to a better result than in the movie adaptation of the Lemony Snicket Books). The film also has a legitimately great cast led by James Marsden and with Sonic voiced by Ben Schwartz but also supported by amazing talents like Neal McDonough, Adam Pally, and Battlestar Galactica’s Michael Hogan. That is where the good ends.
A trailer for a kid’s movie shouldn’t make me feel this uneasy. Also, WTH is with Gangsta’s Paradise in this trailer? I feel more flustered than anything, so I’m not even sure if this makes sense or it just comes across as a rant. At least I know I’m not the only one. As of right now, the video is running about a 50% dislike ratio on YouTube.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
