Ridley Scott’s Gladiator took audiences by storm when it premiered 24 years ago, starring Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. While the film is a classic, it’s not exactly the kind of movie you’d expect a sequel to… especially given the way it ended. But, whether due to artistic inspiration from the director, or a desire to milk a popular IP for a few more dollars, Scott is back with Gladiator II.
The only returning character/ actor from the original film is Connie Nielsen as Lucilla. She still sits by the hand of the emperors who appear to be the sons of Phoenix’s Commodus (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger). The new Gladiator will be played by Paul Mescal. He’ll be trained by Denzel Washington as Macrinus, and he will face off against the Emperors’ general, Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius.
