After the unveiling of “Captain America: The First Avengers,” Marvel unveiled the first footage/trailer for Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor.”
Branagh was there to greet fans along with the entire cast and crew that includes Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston. And as the crowd slowly quieted from the frenzy of all the appearances, everyone was told to put on their 3D glasses as they were about to roll the first footage of “Thor!”
The footage was essentially an extended 3D trailer that covered the plot and had several fan favorite reveals. It begins with Thor being held in a S.H.I.E.L.D. building and is being interrogated by Agent Coulsen. There are quick cuts of Thor freaking out in a hospital bed and kicking the crap out of highly trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in a massive storm. Meanwhile, Coulsen is convinced that Thor is a trained operative because of what he had done to his men. He wants to know where he had received the training and who he is.
The footage then changes to Asgard and we’re shown a golden palace above the sky. We’re shown Odin (Anthony Hopkins) who’s very upset at Thor and his reckless and irresponsible behavior. It’s a very intense scene between father and son as Odin belittles Thor and calls him selfish. Thor, responses believing his father is just a foolish old man. Loki tries to interject but Odin has none of that and screams at him to yield and be quiet. An angry Odin then curses Thor and casts him out of Asgard stripping him of all his powers. Hopkins’ acting in this scene was terrifying and amazing.
Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and her assistant Darcy (Kat Dennings) find Thor lying in the middle of the desert. Thor is conscious and disappointly mutters “This is Earth, isn’t it?” He’s taken in and cleaned up and all the ladies at the panel got a treat as Thor had just taken a shower and was shirtless. Darcy comments how he’s the best looking crazy homeless man he’s seen.
We’re then shown his hammer stuck in a rock or concrete slab. There’s a voice over by Odin explaining the power of the hammer “Wosoever lifts this hammer, if he is found worthy, shall wield the power of Thor.”
Thor tries to lift it but is unable to,
Meanwhile we’re shown Asgard again and this time Loki has been crowned the new leader. None of the people appear happy including Sif and Baldor. There are some quick cuts of a battle between Thor and Loki. We get to see him wield the hammer so it can be assumed that these were scenes near the end of the final film.
It cuts to black. The audience thinks it’s over and are cheering…
Boom! The Destroyer is revealed in action for the first time. Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are trying to contain it by speaking to it. Believing that its one of Starks’ little toys. Coulson asks for identification and the Destroyer complies by glowing and opening up its face and blasting the agents all the hell!!!!!!!!!!!
If fans weren’t sold on “Thor” I’m sure they’re on the bandwagon now. While the 3D was not extremely impressive, the footage was beyond any Comic-Con nerd’s wildest dreams. Marvel has really out done themselves by putting together this epic and, might I add, very long trailer.
Overall, it made the night and completed Saturday’s portion of SDCC… until the Avengers were revealed afterwards which just brought down the house. Not even Kevin Smith could compete after that.
